Very Rare 1850 Large Bennington Covered Storage Jar Rockingham Glaze Yellow Ware
Here we have a very rare and beautiful early Bennington storage jar. This can still be used as its intended purpose as a kitchen storage jar. The jar is decorated with applied spatter Rockingham glaze with the yellow ware clay showing through. The lid has an attractive applied strap handle with applied lug handles on the side of the jar. Measuring 7 ¼” in height to the rim, 9 ¾” to the top of the handle and 9 wide across the rim. A similar large storage jar is shown in. “Bennington Pottery and Porcelain” by Richard Carter Barret in Plate 128. The jar is in excellent condition with only a chip on the underside of one of the handles with no other damage or repairs. Here we have a very rare seated cat. Pottery cats are not found as often as dogs which are more plentiful. This would have been crafted by a master potter who did an excellent job of modeling the cat including the detail in the eyes and whiskers. The cat sits upright on a raised base that is hollow on the underside. Measuring 8 ½ to the top of its ears, the cat is a survivor with darkened chips around the edge of the base, a small chip on one of the ears and a glaze rub on the cats nose. There is no other damage or any repairs to the cat. This was probably played with by many children over the cats long life time. This is a very rare form not appearing in any of the books on collecting yellow ware.
