A Very rare large Sawankhalok ceramic black glazed vase, 14-15th c. Thailand 12.5 in. From a shipwreck and provenance of major eastern US educational institution. 7.5 inches height. The district was originally the capital district of Sawankhalok province, which in 1932 was merged with Sukhothai province. The new province was at first named Sawankhalok, but in 1939 was renamed to Sukhothai and its capital district moved to Sukhothai district. In 1917, the district was renamed from Mueang to Wang Mai Khon. 1938 it was named Mueang Sawankhalok , which was changed to only Sawankhalok in 1939 following the province rename.
