Stunning Very Large Rare German Schmeckenbecher 8 Day Hunter Deer Cuckoo Clock
We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally large number of music boxes and other very nice collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. This is an outstanding find of an unusual, deeply hand carved, very large, absolutely beautiful 8 day Hunters cuckoo clock that was created in the Black Forest about 70 years ago in “Germany” by “Emil Schmeckenbecher, ” one of the finest clock makers in this region of the world! The clock is made from cured and aged Linden wood which has been the preferred wood of carvers in the Black Forest since the 1870’s. The case front is adorned with six, large, heavily carved oak leaves and another, even fancier oak leaf is found on the pendulum. The carvings are exceptional, deep, intricate, and wavy. There is a carved, wooden game bird mounted to the right of the dial and an equally impressive carved wooden rabbit to the left side. The case has a carved wooden game bag at the very bottom in front complete with straps and an incredible top piece consisting of a large wooden deer head complete with wooden antlers and a wooden shotgun mounted underneath; breathtaking! The wooden dial has a work Alpen Mountain Horn circling it complete with a wooden mouthpiece and wood horn end. The wood dial itself has a black backdrop and features raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancy matching hands to point out the time. The clock has a wood back and latches securely. It easily removes to allow access to the early design, weight driven mechanical movement inside the case that is produced by “Regula” and bears the Schmeckenbecher name. An weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled every 8 days or as often as you wish to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The tall wooden bellow or whistle tubes are in good shape and the tops look and sound good too! At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nice sounding metal chime inside the case before retreating back inside the clock, closing the door behind him. The bird reappears at the top of each hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours before going back inside the clock; fascinating! The clock works quite well here, keeps good time, and cuckoos as it should. Keep in mind this is an old clock so some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home. The clock does appear to have been maintained over the years. Nonetheless, we always recommend to our clock customers to service their antique or vintage clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a great clock like this one and keep it running strong. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, an unusual, carved oak leaf pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. I’ve looked the clock over fairly well and can’t find any missing parts, repairs, or damage. It shows only average or less wear and is absolutely gorgeous on display! It is an impressive old clock and one of the largest I’ve seen in recent years measuring about 23 1/2″ high (from the tip of the antlers to the bottom of the game bag and not counting the weights or pendulum), about 10″ at its deepest point, and about 14 1/2 across the top. This clock is just stunning and a great nostalgic look back at the greatness of Black Forest workmanship. It is very likely to turn heads when displayed in your home, office, or wherever it is that you care to showcase a very nice, beautifully carved, very rare 8 day cuckoo clock with a real legacy behind it.
