Very Nice Rare Large German Quail Steinadler Hunter Deer Head Cuckoo Clock
We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. This is an outstanding find of a very rare, handcarved, working, hunter style, quail cuckoo clock that was created in the Black Forest of Schonach, “Germany” about 75 years ago by “Steinadler, ” one of the finer clockmakers in this historic region! The clock is simply astonishing and one of the finest Ive ever seen. Frankly, were it not for the cause listed below, this exquisite clock would remain in our home; no doubt about it. The clock is carved of cured and aged Linden wood that is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. The case is adorned with nine, large, hand carved wooden oak leaves on the front that are exceptional, deep, intricate, and wavy. Another oak leaf is found on the wooden pendulum and there is a large carved wooden game bag at the base of the case, below the dial and all are finished in a blended, deep walnut finish; very nice! There is a large, nicely carved wooden rabbit to the right of the dial and an equally impressive carved wooden game bird affixed to the left side. The dial has a black backdrop and features large, easy to read Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancy matching hands to point out the time. There is a wooden, round mountain horn encircling the dial complete with a wooden mouthpiece and wood horn end. The top is a separate carving and features a large wooden deer head complete with antlers and two wooden shotguns mounted under it in a criss-cross manner. The clock has a fitted wood back and latches securely. It easily removes to allow access to the weight driven mechanical movement inside the case bearing the Steinadler name and “Germany” too. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock, quail call, and cuckoo activity. All three of the wooden bellow tubes are in good shape and the tops look good as well; sound good too! This clock makes extraordinary sounds. At the quarter hour mark, the small wooden door above the dial on the right opens and a colorful red bird with flapping wings stands in the doorway. He gives off three quail sounds in tandem before retreating back inside the case; six sounds at the half hour; nine at the three-quarter hour, and twelve full quail sounds at the top of each hour. At the top of the hour and once the quail bird is safely back inside the case, the door to the left above the dial opens and a colorful blue bird with flapping wings stands in the doorway. The bird correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours before retreating to the safe confines of the inner clock; fascinating! Each of the birds close the doors after making their rounds; fascinating and unlike anything Ive ever seen in a cuckoo clock! The clock works quite well here, keeps good time, chimes correctly, cuckoos as it should, and makes a stunning quail round. It is an old clock and we don’t know the service history though it appears the movement has had regular? Maintenance over the years. Nonetheless, some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home. We always recommend to our clock customers to service their antique or vintage clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a great clock like this one and keep it running strong. The clock comes complete as shown with three sets of attached metal chains, a carved wooden oak leaf pendulum, and three heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. I’ve looked the clock over fairly well and can’t find any damage or missing pieces. It’s an impressive old clock and absolutely breathtaking on display. It’s a large clock too measuring about 21″ high (not counting the weights or pendulum), 11 ½ deep, and about 14 1/2″ across the top. This clock is in a league all its own. Its one of the most stunning clocks you could ever find and a magnificent, nostalgic look back at the greatness of Black Forest workmanship. It will certainly turn a few heads when displayed in your home, office, or wherever it is that you care to showcase a very rare, beautifully carved cuckoo clock with a real history behind it. Be sure to have a look at our. This is an excellent find of a very nice, beautifully and deeply carved, 8 day, large hunter mechanical cuckoo clock that was created about 40 years ago in the Black Forest of what was then, West Germany. It is very seldom that you find a cuckoo clock that is finished in extra Dark Walnut as this one is and the animals and trim are finished in a stunning contrast in a darker medium Walnut; very nice! The clock is beautifully hand carved, of the highest quality, and ornately detailed! It is equally impressive in size too measuring about 19″ high (from the tip of the antlers to the bottom of the game bag and not counting the weights or pendulum), about 9 1/2″ at its deepest point, and about 12 1/2 at its widest point. The clock looks to be carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. There is a carved wooden game bird mounted to the right side of the dial and an equally impressive, beautifully carved wooden rabbit mounted to the left side. The clock front is designed to look like an intricate oak tree adorned with eleven, large, nicely carved wooden oak leaves as well as a carved hunting game bag with straps on the very bottom. The dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and a pair of matching fancy hands to point out the time. T here is a wooden mountain horn surrounding the dial complete with a wooden mouthpiece and wooden horn end. The top is a separate carving that is secured with the old hook and eye system. The carvings featured are that of a large wooden deer head with antlers along with two hand carved wooden shotguns criss-crossed underneath. I don’t think the antlers are made of wood but they sure look real; wow! The back is wood too and secured with a metal latch. It removes to allow access to the all metal, mechanical, weight driven movement created by “Regula, ” is marked “Made in Germany” as well. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled every 8 days or as often as you wish to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The tall bellow or whistle tubes are intact and the tops look and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door. The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours before going back inside the case and closing the door behind him; absolutely fascinating! The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, and cuckoos as it was designed to do. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don’t know the service history though the movement does show signs of past maintenance. Nonetheless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a hand carved wooden oak leaf pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any damage, repairs, or missing pieces. It shows average or less signs of use and maybe just a small nick here and there. I did find some slight discoloration on part of the dial but it’s not detracting… It is a remarkable clock and just gorgeous on display! This clock is a wonderful look back at the greatness of Black Forest workmanship and is certain to capture the imagination of anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent, very unique, mechanical, 8 day Black Forest timepiece with a solid history behind it.
