This master salt is extremely rare and is the only example Ive ever found like this. Master salts were in use during the early 1800s. At that time, salt was a valuable commodity and the form that master salts took reflected that. They are always wide and squat with a wide foot so they wouldnt tip over and spill. This salt has a bowl with four rounded lobes that extend out from the scalloped foot. Each lobe is separated at the rim by a shell with gold gilt around the rim and body. The green, brown, black and white agate decoration goes through the clay rather than being surface applied. The underside of the foot is recessed and is impressed MINTON. Measuring 5 in width diagonally by 2 ½ in height, the master salt is in remarkably mint original condition with no damage or repairs.
