This is a very rare size in the Peasant Valley French opera plate series. On-line, the largest I could find was 10″, and this plate measures 13.25″ in diameter. This platter has the opera “Mignon” as its center. Unlike other plates in the series, this larger version references other operats in the perimeter. Starting above & going clockwise, the Terre de Fer opera references are. La Muette de Portici (the Mute Girl of Portici). Lucie de Lammermoor. Les Noces de Jeannette (Jeannette’s Wedding). Le Barbier de Seville (Barber of Seville). Guillaume Tell (William Tell). The outermost rim is painted with gold trim. The plate is then circled in a forest green band. Frequently misattributed to Parry Vieille, the PV hallmark was used by Mittledorfer, Strauss, Inc. Of New York City on imported pieces. I have also seen these French opera plates misattributed to Pillyvuyt. Note some photos appear redundant because I take photos from all possible angles. On symmetrical items, these photos may appear redundant when there are no distinguishing differences or condition issues between side views.
