ANTIQUE, ARTS & CRAFTS. LARGE LAMP/VASE FROM 1883. Shape/Date: 95(B)/1883. Shape First Seen: c. Diameter: Ten & One-Half Inches. Glaze: Reddish-Brown, Dull w/ Fired-on Gold. This Lamp or Bowl Vase from very early in the Rookwood Shape Book first appeared around 1882 in two sizes, C and B, a seven-inch-tall version of which this one from 1883 is a now very rare example. Peachey, a Rookwood decorator (two years only, 1881-83) and a member of the Cincinnati Pottery Club, covered it in a textured, dark reddish-brown Dull Glaze with fired-on gold effects. Further, it is festooned top to generous bottom in a well-balanced variety of cream and gold leaves and vines executed in heavy slip. But its generous, blousy appeal is altogether overshadowed, not only by the relative rarity of the shape itself but also how well this particular one has held up over nearly the total expanse of the lifetime of the Company to today. Produced in Rookwoods third year, this uncrazed Bowl or Lamp Vase shows only minor wear and very little of the cracking and chipping that afflicts most of the slip-based decoration from Rookwoods distant past. On the bottom are stamped the Company name, Rookwood, production year, 1883, an R for red clay and the shape number, 95. Peachey has left her initials and, in acknowledgement of the Cincinnati Pottery Club, a notation of CPC in black slip. Here we have an extremely rare 1800s banded bowl. The side of the bowl is decorated with 11 bands, 2 brown and 9 white. There was a thick consistency to the glaze used in applying the bands, you can feel the raised bands on the surface of the bowl. The bowl is finely molded with a prominent rounded rim and base. These features and the banding are unique to bowls produced by J. In their day, Jeffords was the Tiffany of yellow ware pottery production, no other American potter approached the quality of what Jeffords was able to produce. Measuring 12 ½ in diameter by 6 in height, the bowl is in original mint condition with only a smudge in two of the bands by the potter during glazing. Jeffords is known for producing large high quality bowls, you will probably never see another bowl like this. Any advanced collector would be pleased to add this bowl to their yellow ware collection. We acquired a antique store that was in CA for many years. They closed down in the early 90’s and boxed everything into storage. We opened it around 2010. The original tag from the antique store is still attached but that is all the information I have. Very Rare Telegraph Pottery Art Nouveau Large Vase/Jardiniere Circa Early 20th C. 16 cm (6.25) high. Rare Art Nouveau large vase/jardinière, probably made in the early part of the 20th Century, in the USA by Telegraph Pottery. It is not easy to identify early 20th century (or late 19th century) Art Nouveau pieces. There were many being produced, both in Europe, and in the USA, but they are all very rare now. This particular example, does have certain affinities, with many of the US schools, like Teco, Rookwood, Rumrill, Red Wing, etc. All are very collectable, and this is a superb example. This piece has a brown and green drip glaze, and gorgeous Art Nouveau styled moulded decorations. It is embossed on the base, with the “Telegraph” name, and the number #4. Very good condition, no chips or cracks, but fine crazing throughout. This rare Art Nouveau piece would make a great addition to any collection. Check out my other items. Very Rare Find: Early 1700’s Moravian Large Double handled water Vessel Pottery Jug. We had the privilege of acquiring this incredible piece from an avid historical collector who is retiring. This is a large double handled water vessel from the early 1700s Moravian period. This beautiful piece stands 10.75 (over 27cm), and is 10 (25.5cm) wide. The opening at top is 5.75 (14.5cm) across. We tried to take many pictures to show exact condition of the piece. There are two small chips on the lip as pictures, but in extremely good shape for being 300+ years old. A little history about the Moravian People in the 1700s. The eighteenth century saw the renewal of the Moravian Church through the patronage of Count Nicholas Ludwig von Zinzendorf, a pietist nobleman in Saxony. Some Moravian families fleeing persecution in Bohemia and Moravia found refuge on Zinzendorf’s estate in 1722 and built the community of Herrnhut. The new community became the haven for many more Moravian refugees. Count Zinzendorf encouraged them to keep the discipline of the Unitas Fratrum, and he gave them the vision to take the gospel to the far corners of the globe. August 13, 1727, marked the culmination of a great spiritual renewal for the Moravian Church in Herrnhut, and in 1732 the first missionaries were sent to the West Indies. This is an incredible piece and would make a centerpiece for most collections. On rare occasions it may take longer.
