Very Rare Large Khmer Bronze Phra Upakut In A Conch Shell Ornament
Very Rare Khmer Bronze Phra Upakut in a Large Conch Shell Ornament. It was sourced in Cambodia by a friend many years ago. Very good overall condition. There is a little oxidation which I elected not to remove as I did not want to alter the patina. Dimensions: 13.8 X 8.5 cm appx. Pra Upakut, otherwise known as Pra Bua Khem, was an Arahant whom the Buddha praised for his great magical powers and who was considered by Lord Buddha to be the most powerful of all Arahants. Before Buddha entered Nirvana, he asked Pra Upakut to stay alive until the arrival of Pra Arya Sri Maedtrai (Maitreya) and to protect Sasana Buddha and the Dhamma teachings. Thai Buddhists believe he is still alive to this day, that he resides in the middle of the Great Ocean, with a lotus leaf on his head and that he remains alive to come to the aid of the Dhamma whenever necessary to help sentient beings.
