Rare, Very Large, Raw, Vintage Genuine Hawaiian Black Coral Antipatharian Base. I personally harvested this black coral, when I was a Maui Diver, in the 1980’s. The black coral was harvested outside of Maui, at the depth of just over 300 feet. That dive, was my personal deepest dive, with scuba gear. The black coral measures 4.825 length, 2.361 inches wide, 2.224 inches height, and weighs 116.3 grams (4.15 oz). The coral piece is from the base of a large black coral tree, and I have polished the base to bring out its beauty. This coral was a dead collected tree, which is why you see the brown color. The scientific name for black coral is Antipatharian, derived from the genus name Antipathes, Greek for “against disease, ” a reference to the common belief held by peoples, that corals of this type had mystical curative powers. Amulets of black coral were worn to ward off evil spirits. Black coral is popular as a talisman to protect a person from being stuck in negativity, and it is believed that it changes negative energies, such as anxiety and sorrow, into positive energies.
