The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is an American carrier capable supersonic, twin engine, two seat, twin tail, variable sweep wing jet fighter aircraft. The F-14 first flew on 21 December 1970. The first F-14 deployment was in 1974 with the United States Navy aboard USS Enterprise. The F-14 served as the USN’s primary maritime air superiority fighter into the 2000’s. The Tomcat was retired by the U. Navy on 22 September 2006. They were replaced with the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. Squadron VF-11 was originally commissioned in 1942. In July of 1948, the “Sundowners” were re-designated as VF-111. The squadron began flying the F-14 Tomcat in October of 1978. The squadron was disestablished on 31 March 1995 as part of post-Cold War force reductions of the Navy’s F-14 community with its aircraft assigned to other F-14 squadrons. The F-14’s final flights were in 2005 when they transitioned to the FA-18F Super Hornet. The Tomcat was the star aircraft of the 1986 movie “Top Gun”.
