Rare and Very Large Japanese Satsuma Vase or Urn, Late Edo/Early Meiji Period
This massive and very rare Satsuma urn likely dates from the late Edo or early Meiji period, or around 1850 to 1880. It measures 16 inches at its widest point, 17 inches high, 8 3/4 inches at its mouth, and 9 3/4 inches at its base. The urn has a lovely decoration featuring flowers and vines, together with three faux handles depicting a mythological creature. There is also a beautiful brown drip glaze to the piece (see photos). The condition of the urn is very good, with only some lines to the base, possibly cracks from the original firing. The shop is conveniently located on Route 1 in Hampton Falls.
