Samurai Honda Tadakatsu Large Antique Bizen Pottery Statue Very Rare
Some of you may know him or know of him from the Japanese Sword show circuit. He had high tier contacts in the art world including organizations such as Sotheby’s. This a complete and very detailed unique pottery statuette of Samurai General Honda Tadakatsu sitting on his armor chest. Honda is famous for assisting the Tokugawas to end the civil wars in Japan and usher in the Edo period. He is also famous for participating in over 60 battles without a major injury. A Samurai’s Samurai. Measuring 12.5″ high x 7.75″ wide x 8.5 deep. It weighs several pounds. All surfaces were painted in high detail throughout the piece, including inside and under surfaces that would not normally be viewed. The kabuto and sode are removable. His left hand is missing an object, probably a war fan. It is not broken off but missing as there is a space in his clenched hand for an object. Several repairs have been made on this such as the front horns on the kabuto (the madate) have been glued into place after breaking off. The sode have both been repaired. Included with this is a copy of the Okayama-ken Bizen Togei museum catalog. This features photos of other famous Samurai statuettes that are on exhibit in their museum that are very similar to this statuette. My statuette is not in the catalog because I own it and therefore it is not in the museum. They are unique one off pieces as is this piece in my listing.
